Kate Szurek is a principal with the Skagit Law Group, PLLC. Her law practice focuses on estate planning, estate settlement, and tax law.
Kate earned her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Washington. She is Thomas More scholar and cum laude graduate of Gonzaga University School of Law, and obtained her master of laws in taxation from the University of Washington, which she attended on a fellowship. Kate served as a teaching assistant while attending law school, was president of the prestigious William O. Douglas Committee and of the Martin Luther King Committee, was chosen Outstanding Woman Law School Graduate of Gonzaga University School of Law by the National Association of Women Lawyers, and is a life-time member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.
Kate is currently a member of Skagit County Bar Association, the Washington State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. She is also a member of the Real Property, Probate and Trust and the Taxation Sections of both the Washington State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. She has served for years on WSBA’s Legislative Review Committee and the Estate and Gift Tax Subcommittee of the Taxation Section of the Washington State Bar Association.
Kate has an extensive volunteer service record, having worked with victims of domestic violence and having served on a number of boards, including three local school boards, the Washington State School Directors Board of Directors, the Board of Trustees for the Skagit Hospice Foundation, and the Northwest Washington Estate Planning Council, as vice president, president immediate past president, and secretary.
A Washington native, Kate was born in Seattle, raised in Yakima, and has lived and worked in the legal field in a number of Washington counties, including for over 20 years in northeastern Washington, before moving back to the Skagit Valley in 2000. She currently lives in La Conner, is working on building a home she and her architect sister designed – on three and half acres on Skagit Bay, just a few miles from where her daughter April lives on 15 acres with her husband and three children. Now that he is retired after 28 years in the military (last serving as a Master Sargent in specials with the United States Air Force), her son-in-law is undertaking with his wife April to start a wellness center and MMA facility in La Conner – an activity in which the entire family is enthusiastically involved.
